Final Day of the Fortune Cup:

Yusei did one last tune up on his duel runner before the duel. His opponent would be Greiger, the fearsome man who beat Leo with ease in the first round. He was not sure how this duel would go but he had to win it. Revving up the engine it gave a satisfying sound that assured him repairs were complete.

The door to the garage opened and a familiar red head entered. “You’re ready?” She asked.

He glanced up at her. “Just about. Did you come to wish me luck?”

“No, I need the garage for repairs and prefer to work alone.” She walked over to the blue duel runner parked at the far side. “Besides, I doubt a duelist of your caliber needs luck.”

His eyes followed her as she walked by. Immediately he noticed that something was off. Her hair part was styled differently with the braid sitting lower. Underneath her jacket collar bandages peaked out that were not there last night. “Did something happen?” He asked.

She glanced over her shoulder. “I slipped in the shower.” She replied. From the tone of her voice, that was all he was getting.

Part of him knew that Godwin did something to her. His fist clenched around the wrench, one more reason for him to hate that man.

“You should hurry up. The crowd doesn’t like to be kept waiting.” She told him.

He inserted his deck into the duel runner and grabbed his helmet. “I’ll see you after the match.” He promised.

She gave him a sly smile. “Pretty confident aren’t you?” The girl leaned against her duel runner to face him.

“I decided I’m not leaving this tournament until I face you.” He slid his visor down. Revving up the engine he shot out of the garage to take his place on the starting line.

She sighed once he left. “Yusei Fudo, it’s a shame we had to meet under these circumstances.” She recalled Godwin’s threat from the night before. He had to be her enemy, for now.

Scarlet spent more time watching the duel on the television instead of making repairs. Yusei duel in a style similar to hers, relying on the bonds between monsters to bring forth high-level Synchros. Those blue eyes were unwavering and his deck matched that determination. Even from the garage she could see that his duel spirits trusted him entirely.

Once the duel was over she strapped on her duel disc to her right arm, her next opponent would be in a standing duel. Yusei came into the garage just in time to see her leave. He watched the trail of red hair disappear behind the door. However he saw that she had left the television on with images from his duel being displayed. It made him smile to know that she had seen the duel.

The stage lifted her into the arena where the crowd was cheering. She glanced around to see everything since in her first duel she did not pay much attention. Off to her right she saw a group of children with a handmade sign saying “Go Scarlet!” on it. Her eyes widened in horror.

“What are they doing here?” She recognized the orphans and their caretaker from the Satellite. They should have been back in the Satellite, out of Godwin’s reach. But here they were cheering her on. She shot a glare towards the tower where Godwin was, how dare he bring them here.

But she did not have long to express her anger as her opponent enter the arena. It was a strange man who wore a lab coat with some lab goggles. “I believe it’s time I teach everyone the beauty of science.” He grinned. Around the arena people cheered “Dr. Moro!”.

Scarlet drew a card. “I’ll go first.” She glanced down at the draw. “I summon Sky- Moon Guard in defense mode. (LVL: 4 ATK: 500 DEF: 2000) Then I end my turn with a face down.” She set one card.

Dr. Moro drew. “I activate the spell card pH Meter. My opponent draws another card and if that monster has a level of six or lower then I can special summon an Acid monster from my hand, if the level is 8 or higher, I can special summon a Base monster. Lastly, if the level is 7 then I can special summon Water Dragon from my hand or deck.” He smiled. “Now draw.”

She drew a card then held it up for him to see. It was level 5 Sky- Dawn Knight. “Perfect, I summon Acid Hydrochloric in attack mode! (LVL: 2 ATK:300 DEF: 400). Now when this monster is summoned in attack mode it inflicts 500 points of damage.” The blob shot some fluid out at Scarlet.

The stuff landed on her left arm and quickly began to eat away at her jacket. In surprise she shook her arm to shake it off where it ate away at the ground. Part of her arm had been burned by the time she got it off. “Of course whatever damage you take in this duel is real. After countless hours of research I discovered a way to enhance a duel disc to grant the duelist powers similar to that of a physic duelist. I prepared it to take down the Black Rose Witch, but I suppose this match will be a practice run. Now I summon Acid Boric in attack mode. (LVL: 3 ATK: 1000 DEF: 800) At the end of each turn Acid Boric inflicts 200 damage for each Acid monster I control.”
Another glob shot at her.

She dodged the projectile and it began to consume the ground again. Her life points fell to 3100. He then set a card face down before ending his turn. She drew her next card. “I special summon the Tuner monster Ursula Minor since I control another Sky monster. (LVL: 1 ATK: 100 DEF: 600). Second, I summon the monster Sky Twilight Witch. (LVL: 4 ATK: 1600 DEF: 1000). I tune my Ursula Minor with Moon Guard, two souls become one blade that slices through the night, come forth Sky- Blue Moon Knight!” The blue knight descended onto the field.

Scarlet then activated her face down. “I activate the spell card Meter Assault! By equipping this to a Sky monster I can inflict the original attack of the monster that was destroyed in battle as damage. Now Blue Moon Knight, battle with Acid Boric. “ She instructed.
The Knight launched her attack against the blob. Her blade sliced cleanly through the monster and successfully inflicted 1100 points of damage bringing his life points down to 2900.

“I activate my continuous trap, Arrhenius Acids. When an Acid monster is attacked I can negate the destruction then special summon an Acid monster whose level is lower than the attacked monster. I special summon another Acid Hydrochloric in attack mode.” Another blob appeared. It shot out some acid that she barely managed to dodge if not for quick reactions. Her life points fell to 2600.

“I end my turn with two face downs.” She replied. Since Blue Moon Knight was unable to destroy a monster her effect did not activate. “I just need to keep calm. His deck has plenty of openings, next turn I’ll expose them.” She took a deep breath.

He grinned at her. “It would be wise to forfeit now, or else you might suffer further harm.”

She glared at him. “I wouldn’t get too cocky, this duel isn’t over yet.”

He laughed. “In that case you won’t mind going to Neo Domino Hospital after this.” He drew his next card. “I activate the field spell Acid Bay! This card inflicts 200 points of damage for each Acid monster effect activated this turn.” The field became covered in a green swamp leaving two spots for the duelists. “Next I activate pH Meter!” Scarlet drew another card then held it up to him.

His smile grew. “Sky- Oxomoco is a level 8 monster. That means I can special summon a Base monster from my deck.” A card slid out. “I summon Sodium Amide Base in attack mode! (LVL: 6 ATK: 2100 DEF: 1500) Now it’s effect activates. For each Acid monster I control I gain 400 life points.” His life points increased to 4100. “Lastly, Sodium Amide, destroy Twilight Witch!” He instructed.

“I activate my trap card, Rising Knight! When a Sky monster is targeted in an attack I can return it to my deck then summon a Sky monster who is the same level as the attacking monster. I summon Sky- Black Dwarf in attack mode.” (LVL: 6 ATK: 2200 DEF: 1800) The two monsters collided and Scarlet’s smashed the gooey monster with his massive mallet. His life points fell to 4000.

“No matter. I activate Acid Boric effect. You take 600 points of damage.” It shot out a glop of acid but she did not have the room to dodge it. The acid burned her thigh pretty severely. Gritting her teeth she endured it, she could not show the children pain. “Secondly, Acid Bay’s effect activates, another 200 points of damage.” More acid burned her right shoulder and successfully ruined her jacket. Her life points fell to 1800. “I end my turn.”

Yusei watched the duel from the garage. She must seriously be hurting from those burns. The camera zoomed in on her face so he could see the sweat on her brow. “Come on Scarlet, I know you have a trick up your sleeve.” He thought watching her.

The little orphans holding up the sign for her looked worried. “Bushka, Scarlet looks really hurt out there.” The smallest child tugged at her sleeve.

“She’s gonna win! Scarlet going to be the next Duel King!” The older girl with glasses held up her sign. “Go Scarlet!” She cheered.

The boy looked over at her. “Wouldn’t she be a Duel Queen?” He asked.

“No! Scarlet would be a King!”

“Guys are Kings, girls are Queens!”

The old woman named Bushka watched the red head. She may be banged up but she was far from out. Those green eyes turned to see the old woman. Bushka gave her an approving nod, a signal to go full out.

Scarlet turned her attention back to the duel. She drew her next card then smiled. “I activate the spell card Blessing of the Rain Goddess. This destroys all face up spell cards then I gain 500 life points for each.” Storm clouds formed overhead. Then rain poured onto the Duelist soaking them both and washing away the acid everywhere.

“Impossible, you’re a psychic Duelist as well?” He demanded.

“Don’t look so surprised, after all, a Duelist should be prepared for anything.” She replied. The rain finished and the clouds disappeared as quickly as they came. Her life points rose to 2800. “Next I’m activating the field spell Milky Way! All Sky monsters gain 200 attack. Second, I can discard one card from my hand to send one card from my deck to the graveyard.”

Galaxy patterns coated the stadium. Around them pebbles began to float off the ground and her braid rose into the air, same was said for his lab coat. Her field spell combined with her power had lessened the gravity in the arena.

Dr. Moro seemed shock by her move. “Why would you want to lessen your own deck?”

“I’ll show you why. By removing Sky- Ursula Major from my graveyard I can increase the attack of one of my monsters by 800. The monster I choose is Sky- Blue Moon Knight.” The Knight’s attack points rose to 2900. “Second, I activate Black Dwarf’s effect. At the beginning of the battle phase I can select one monster that my opponent controls. If I control another Sky monster then I can reduce that monster’s attack to zero. Black Hammer!” The hammer slammed onto the ground and sent dark energy that wrapped around Acid Boric. Its attack fell to 0.

“Impossible, how were you able to overcome my strategy? I spent the whole night putting it together!” He demanded.

Scarlet stood between her two monsters. “You were so focused on burning away my life points that you failed to see the power of my monsters and the bonds they share. Maybe if you were a little more adaptive you would have won. Now, Blue Moon Knight attack Acid Boric.” The Knight destroyed the blob and brought his life points down to 1100. “Due to Blue Moon Knight’s effect she can attack again if she destroys that monster. Battle again with Acid Boric!” The final attack wiped out his remaining life points.

A loud cheer erupted through the crowd as Scarlet was declared the victor. She walked as straight as she could with her burns so no one would see her pain. Once she entered the hallway a man in a trench coat was there to greet her.

“That was some duel there.” He commented.

He was not one of the competitors so she did not pay him much attention. Her burns were starting to hurt and they needed to be treated. Second, her hair was still soaking wet and she really did not need a cold right now.

The man stood in front of her. “My name is Sawyer. I’m the Leader of the Arcadia Movement. It’s a safe place for psychic Duelists.” He started.

“Out of my way.” She instructed.

Sawyer continued. “We can offer you a place where you will be accepted.”

Those determined green eyes met his. “I already have my place.” She walked past him. “And the thing about these secret organizations, they often have secret agendas.”

He watched her walk down the hallway with interest. One of his underlings approached him. “Find out everything about our mystery Duelist. After this tournament I want her escorted to the Arcadia Building.” He ordered. The man lowered his head before retreating. Sawyer walked back to where Akiza was waiting for him.

She stood up. “What did she say?” She asked. There was some excitement in her voice with excitement in her eyes. However she did her best to keep her calm demeanor.

“She’s interested in the movement and will talk more after the tournament. However we need to be careful with our actions, Godwin is watching.” He reminded.

The young woman nodded. “Once I win this tournament I’ll speak to her about her power.” She strapped on her duel disc since she was up next. Perhaps the girl could show her how to control her own psychic powers. With that thought she left to take her place on the arena.

Sawyer smiled. If thing went smoothly he would have two powerful psychic Duelists under his control by the end of this. This tournament was better than he thought.

Scarlet ran her hand under some cold water in the women’s restroom. She patted some water onto the other burns. The skin was a vivid red and some of it was bubbling from the burns. There were no medical personal to see to her. She knew that Godwin had a hand in that matter. For now she would be on her own.

Bending over the sink she bit back the pain, she still had two more Duels. “Just a little longer.” She stood back up and left.

Outside of the restroom Yusei Fudo was waiting for her. “Yusei? Didn’t expect to see you here.” She commented.

His eyes looked over the burns. “You should get those treated.” He commented.

She laughed. “Well competitors can’t leave the arena and I doubt the medical personal are allowed to treat me.”

“Let me take a look.” He offered. She raised an eyebrow. “I have some experience from treating… friends in the Satellite.”

At this point the burns were stinging more and she would be unable to apply bandages with a bummed hand. “Fine, I have nothing to lose.” She followed him back to the garage.

Yusei pulled out a first aid kit from his duel runner trunk. “Sit down, I’ll take a look at it.” She sat down on a spare chair while he opened the kit. “It doesn’t look too severe. I’ll disinfectant it then wrap it. Should hold for the tournament.” He withdrew some hydrogen peroxide and put some on a gauze. “This might sting.” He applied it to the damaged skin.

She flinched but made no sound. The only noise in the garage was the sound of him tending to her. His hands brushed against her skin gently while he wrapped the bandages. It reminded him of all the previous times he had done this for her.

Her green eyes watched him with interest. His hands moved skillfully around the would and his touch was delicate. It was surprising considering the man hands he had. The second thing that surprised her was how at ease she felt with him, particularly since the met the night before. He was the one person at this tournament that she could let her guard down around.

Once her thigh was treated he secured the bandages with clips. “How about the others?” He asked.

She took her jacket off. “Might as well.” She was wearing a long sleeve shirt that was navy on the top with the bottom half being white.

Yusei disinfected the other two wounds and wrapped them. On her left arm he noted burn scars along with the chain scar he knew. “What happened there?” He asked.

“About two years ago I was caught in a fire. Got some pretty nasty burns.” She sighed.

He perked up. “Really? How did you escape?” He asked. Inside of his chest his heart pounded. Now he was finally going to get an answer to the question he carried for two years.

She shook her head. “I don’t really remember. Bumped my head pretty badly.” She sighed. “After that all I remember was waking up in some old lady’s house. Barely could recall my own name.” He began to wrap up her shoulder. “But she took care of me, nursed me back to health, and gave me a home.” She smiled softly.

Yusei secured the last bandage in place. “All done.” He pulled his hands away from her.

Scarlet clenched and unclenched her fist. “Thank you Yusei, it feels much better now.” She slipped her jacket back on.

He put the first aid kit away. “You should still get that treated after this tournament.” He instructed.

She shrugged. “Maybe, if I have time.” She teased. Then the television announced that the next duel would be starting. “I’ll grab some soda from the vending machine and we can watch.”

“Are you sure?” He asked.

“Think of it as repaying you for the treatment.” She grinned. “Besides, I’m a bit bored and you’re a pretty cool guy to hang out with.” Closing the door she left to get some drinks.

Yusei leaned against his duel runner. In two duels he would face her, he would have the opportunity to reawaken her memory. But for right now, he could enjoy this time with her.

She returned with two sodas that were chilled. Handing one to him she sat in the chair to watch the duel. “Did I miss anything?” She asked. Scarlet had a towel with her, that he no idea how she got, that she used to dry her hair.

He shook his head. “It’s only the second turn.” The two of them sat together to watch the duel of the Black Rose Witch.
Scarlet moves onto the second round of the Fortune Cup to face Dr. Moro. She also discovers that there are more dangerous people in the tournament than meet the eye as she gets caught in a web of plots.
